Bob Shanner
Bob Shanner is a part-time math tutor at Devon Prep, coordinating with the Math Department and the Learning Support staff. He currently teaches five sections of Math Plus, newly created supplemental study/review/tutorial sections that meet 2-3 times per cycle. A long-time math teacher who has taught PreAlgebra through Precalculus classes, Bob also served as a private school administrator (at various times Math Dept Chair, Dean of Students, Academic Dean, Upper School Head, Head of School) over the course of his career. He retired from his full-time position at Episcopal School of Jacksonville (FL) in 2018 and moved with his wife, Fairlie, to Downingtown to be closer to their granddaughters in West Chester. Not expecting to continue teaching, Bob was lured back into the classroom by what he describes as Devon’s unique environment that features a relaxed, respectful atmosphere combined with emphasis on personal growth, high academic standards and personal responsibility. Mr. Shanner began teaching at Devon in January 2019, picking up one section of Algebra 1, before teaching two sections of Algebra 1 the following year. He sat out the 2020-21 school year due to Covid, but returned to Devon in September, 2021 to tutor on a part-time basis.
Bob holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Stanford University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Loyola College of Maryland. An avid, but only moderately-skilled golfer, Bob and his wife, Fairlie, delight in spending time with their two grown daughters, one son-in-law, and two beautiful, clever, talented granddaughters.
