Devon Prep Students Hold Mock Presidential Debate

In an effort  to generate interest in the recent election among the whole student body, Devon Prep’s Student Council sponsored a Mock Presidential Debate. History Teacher Mr. Michael Collins moderated the debate, which included two five-person panels, one representing Democrats (D) and the other representing Republicans (R).

The panels were comprised of eleventh graders Robert and Christopher Smith, Brendan Fulmer and Brendan Coyne and twelfth graders Walter Snook, Mark Rafferty, Felix deRosen, Alexander Sakers, Christopher D’Aniello and Brian Lefchak. Each student was charged with learning all he could about his party’s and candidate’s position on several issues.

Among the areas addressed during the debate were: Economic Policy, Health Care and Education, Foreign Policy, including the war in Iraq and Terrorism, Energy, and Immigration.  Collins prepared and presented each question. The responses were two minutes long with a one minute rebuttal.
